THE Aisling Irish Community Center in Yonkers is holding a community meeting on Wednesday, April 2 in the center with Yonkers Police Commissioner Edmund Hartnett and members of the Yonkers Police Department to address fears or concerns residents living in the area of McLean Avenue/Yonkers may have.Executive director of the center Orla Kelleher told the Irish Voice that Hartnett felt a meeting in the Irish community was imperative in light of a recent alleged assault that took place involving four off duty New York Police Officers last September. "It created a lot of controversy in the area," said Kelleher. Taking that incident into account and episodes in times past the Aisling Center and the commissioner's office have joined forces in an effort to bring about a more trusting and lasting relationship between the Yonkers Police Department and the Irish community. "The meeting will create an open forum for people to air their concerns in an open and safe way to the commissioner and the police present," said Kelleher.Hartnett will address the meeting and will answer any questions that he can.Kelleher said, "While there may have been a volatile relationship between the Irish community and the Yonkers Police in the past, I now urge people to attend the meeting at the center if they have any particular concerns or issues they would like to raise."Kelleher also said it was important for people to know, especially new undocumented to the area, that the police are not concerned with the status of any individuals either at the meeting or at any point in time. "In times past several incidents have gone unreported because people were undocumented were worried about coming forward, she said. "Tomorrow (Wednesday) night we want to dispel that rumor. It's important to always come forward. At the end of the day, the police are there to serve and protect us."The meeting will take place at 8 p.m. at the center, which is located at 990 McLean Avenue, Yonkers.
