DEMOCRATIC presidential candidate Senator Hillary Clinton will participate in the first Irish American Presidential Forum of 2008 on Wednesday, April 9 in Manhattan. The forum, which will be co-chaired by attorney John Dearie and radio host Adrian Flannelly, will ask the senator six wide ranging questions on Irish issues including on immigration, Northern Ireland and America's economic role in IrelandFlannelly explained that the aim of the forum is the same as it was when it started back in 1984 when it was addressed by Vice President Walter Mondale and Governor Mike Dukakis. "We have this forum so we can hear from the candidates themselves," said Flannelly. "We want to hear how they respond to our concerns and issues before we get to the election."Flannelly, who will be joined on the panel by New York City Speaker Christine Quinn and Dearie, said those invited to attend Wednesday's forum include members of the Irish community from various sectors, including business and unions. The presidential forum committee is eager to know what future role will Clinton allow the U.S. to play in the Irish peace process if she becomes the next commander in chief. Staying on the topic of Northern Ireland, she will be asked if she plans to continue with the traditional role of appointing a U.S. envoy to the North. She will also be expected to express her general views on immigration policy, an issue that currently affects an estimated 50,000 undocumented Irish in the U.S., and how would she envision her administration addressing the matter. The fourth topic on the agenda will be related to the Irish economy and the future presidential role in helping to maintain good trade relations between Ireland and the U.S.Clinton will be asked if she will summon a White House conference on American-Ireland trade within her first 24 months as president. The committee will also ask the senator if she would make herself available to meet with political leaders of Northern Ireland and if a visit to Ireland and Northern Ireland during her first term in office, if elected, is on her agenda.Flannelly said he is determined that no topic will be skipped over or diluted. "We will make sure in whatever format she chooses, that all questions get answered," he said. The discussion will be streamed live from the Irish Radio Network. It can be accessed through http://www.irishradio.net/tune-in/index.html.
