Irish actor Cillian Murphy beat off strong competition from fellow Irishmen Andrew Scott and Barry Keoghan to win the award for Best Actor in a Motion Picture - Drama at the Golden Globes on Sunday night.
Christopher Nolan's epic World War II movie "Oppenheimer" took home five awards with the HBO hit series "Succession" dominating the TV awards.
"To all my fellow nominees, if you’re Irish or not, you’re all legends," Cillian Murphy said in a speech after accepting the award on Sunday night.
"First question: do I have lipstick all over my nose? I’m just going to leave it."
On stage in Beverly Hills, Murphy saluted "visionary director" Christopher Nolan "for having faith in me for 20 years and six feckin' pictures". He also paid tribute to his "incredible ensemble cast" for supporting him during filming.
"I knew from the first moment I walked on a Christopher Nolan set it was going to be different. I could tell by the level of rigor, the level of focus, the level of dedication."
Murphy, who was nominated alongside fellow Irish stars Keoghan and Scott in addition to Bradley Cooper ("Maestro"), Leonardo Di Caprio ("Killers of the Flower Moon"), and Colman Domingo ("Rustin"), is now the strong favorite to win the Academy Award for Best Actor.
Nolan's "Oppenheimer" took home the award for Best Motion Picture - Drama, with Nolan scooping the Golden Globe for Best Director and Robert Downey Jr. winning Best Supporting Actor.
"Oppenheimer" also won the Golden Globe for Best Original Score - Motion Picture - for Ludwig Göransson.
Elsewhere, Yorgos Lanthimos’s "Poor Things", produced by Dublin's Element Picture, beat the major summer blockbuster "Barbie" in the Best Motion Picture - Musical or Comedy category, with Emma Stone winning Best Actress - Musical or Comedy for her performance in the same film.
In the television categories, "Succession" was the big winner, taking the award for Best Television Series – Drama and acting honors for stars Kieran Culkin (Best Actor), Sarah Snook (Best Actress), and Matthew Macfadyen (Best Supporting Actor).
Meanwhile, the critically acclaimed American comedy-drama series "The Bear" was the big winner in the Musical or Comedy category, winning Best Series - Musical or Comedy in addition to awards for stars Jeremy Allen White (Best Actor) and Ayo Edebiri (Best Actress).
