One person has died and others have been injured following a bus crash on a pedestrianized street in Dublin City Center today, Thursday, February 5.

Bus Éireann confirmed with IrishCentral that on Thursday afternoon, one of its vehicles "was involved in an incident in the Talbot Street/North Earl Street area of Dublin city."

"The vehicle was not in service at the time of the incident," Bus Éireann said.

"Emergency services and Bus Éireann personnel attended the scene. Bus Éireann is offering its full support to the relevant authorities and will provide any additional assistance required.

"No further information is available at this time."

In a statement later on Thursday, An Garda Síochána said that it and emergency services had attended the scene of a fatal road traffic incident involving a bus on North Earl Street in Dublin 1 shortly after 12:30 pm on Thursday.

"One adult male was declared deceased at the scene," An Garda Síochána said.

"Three adults were conveyed to hospital for treatment of injuries of various severity.

"An Garda Síochána is not in a position to provide any further information on casualties at this early stage.

"Local traffic and pedestrian diversions are in place.

"Restrictions are in place around the scene, which has been preserved for examination by Garda Forensic Collision Investigators.

"A Senior Investigative Officer (SIO) has been appointed to lead the investigation from an incident room at Store Street Garda Station.

"An Garda Síochána requests that if anyone has photographs or video of the incident to not share them but to make them available to the Garda investigation team at Store Street Garda Station.

"Anyone with information about this incident who was in the area of North Earl Street between 12:15 pm and 12:45 pm can contact Store Street Garda Station on 01 666 8000, the Garda Confidential Line on 1800 666 111, or any Garda station."

The incident occurred the same day that Ireland's Minister for Justice Jim O'Callaghan was addressing the Dáil on road safety.

Speaking in the Dáil, he mentioned the "unfolding accident on North Earl Street where there's been an incident with a bus and a pedestrian."

O'Callaghan confirmed: "I regret to say that there has been a fatality there and three others have been taken to hospital.

"Obviously, our thoughts are with the family of the person who has been fatally injured and indeed the people who are in the hospital; we wish them well."

Ray McAdam, the Lord Mayor of Dublin, said he was aware of a "serious incident" at the junction of North Earl Street and Talbot Street.

"All emergency services are in attendance and responding decisively.

"I am receiving ongoing updates from Dublin Fire Brigade and am assured that the full emergency response is in place.

"My thoughts are with those who have been injured and with their families at this difficult time.

"I want to reassure Dubliners that the situation  is being actively managed, and I would ask the public to avoid the area to allow emergency services to carry out their work."

Two witnesses, a mother and son, told the Irish Independent that they were sitting in a café beside the crash site when they heard what they initially thought was “a bomb going off."

“We heard a massive bang and the lights flickered,” the mother said.

Her son said he ran out of the shop immediately to try to help anyone he could at what he described as a “chaotic” scene.

“Crowds were gathering around and people were screaming. There were several people trapped and injured under the bus,” he said.
