Have you been meaning to visit Dublin again, or have you always wanted to go? 2016 is your year.

Lonely Planet has ranked Dublin third out of all the cities in the world on its list of top city picks for 2016.

Dublin features third on the list of top cities for 2016, coming in ahead of George Town in Malaysia, Rotterdam in the Netherlands and Mumbai in India. Kotor in Montenegro took the top spot on the top ten cities list, followed second by Quito, Ecuador.

Lonely Planet’s Best in Travel 2016 is a collection of the world’s hottest trends, destinations and experiences for the year ahead which highlights the top ten countries, cities and regions to visit in 2016.

The 2016 guide reads “No longer a dirty auld town, Dublin has a healthy hue – with people embracing its inner green spaces and exploring the wild outdoor arenas along the coast and beyond the pale.”

“2016 is a particularly good time to visit Dublin given the recent renaissance the city is experiencing and the celebrations marking the centenary of the 1916 Easter Rising,” a Lonely Planet spokesperson confirmed.

Recommended attractions include Dublin’s Little Museum, the new Independence Trail around the city that connects the sites of the Easter Rising, Temple Bar and Christchurch, as well as excursions outside of the city center, to Sandycove, the Poolbeg chimneys, and the Dublin Mountains.

Lonely Planet’s recommended times to visit include St. Patrick’s Day (naturally) as well as April, to coincide with the centenary of the 1916 Rising, for which there are a plethora of events planned throughout the city.

“This is a fantastic achievement for Dublin - The Lonely Planet is one of the premier sources of information for people all across the world when researching a holiday and lists like this will quite literally put Dublin, and Ireland, on the map and more importantly in the mind’s eye of thousands of potential visitors,” Orla Carroll, the Dublin head for Failte Ireland, said.

“More than that, it reinforces Dublin as a ‘must-visit’ destination which offers an incredible variety of experiences to its visitors.”

The accolade comes shortly after Dublin's tourism authority re-vamped the city's logo and gave it a new slogan: "Dublin: a breath of fresh air."
