The Irish name Liam was the most popular name for newborn boys in New York in 2022, according to newly released data from the New York Health Department. 

A total of 739 Liams were born in New York City in 2022, according to New York City birth certificate records. Liam has now been the most popular name for newborn boys in New York every year since 2016. 

The name has roots in Ireland and France, with the Irish version meaning "harmony in opinion or feeling". Liam also points to "protection" and a "strong-willed warrior". 

The Irish name Aiden, which stems from Celtic mythology, was the seventh-most popular name for newborn boys in New York in 2022, according to the New York Health Department. 

Noah, Ethan, Lucas, and Jacob completed the top five most popular boys' names, while Emma was the most popular name for newborn girls. 

Emma has been the most popular girl's name in New York since 2017, with 388 Emmas born in 2022. 

Mia, Sophia, Olivia, and Leah completed the top five most popular girl's names. 

The New York Health Department said a total of 99,459 babies were born in New York City in 2022. 

In a statement, Health Commissioner Dr. Ashwin Vasan said "What makes our city special are the New Yorkers – big and small – who call the five boroughs home. So welcome Emma, Liam, Mia, Noah and all the other newborns to New York. Our city and world are better for your presence in the new year and beyond." 

Dr. Leslie Hayes, the Health Department’s Deputy Commissioner of Family and Child Health, added that the department "can't wait" to meet some of New York's newborns. 

"We are here to support new babies and their families from their earliest days and can't wait to meet some of our newest New Yorkers," Dr. Hayes said in a statement.
