Irish names are really having a moment, but some are really falling out of fashion.

Irish place names have been a popular choice for parents over the years – how many Clares or Kerrys do you know?

But they are becoming less favoured among parents these days, probably because they are our friends’ names [or our own!].

A baby naming expert has revealed one Irish place name that is set to become extinct, but not forever.

Baby name consultant SJ Strum has revealed a list of “dad” names which are heading toward extinction, including one Irish place name, according to The Mirror.

So what’s the name? Tyrone. A moniker that you are unlikely to hear a baby with these days.

According to SJ, some names are “not fun and exciting to modern parents choosing names today. Names like this go out of style and have a huge hiatus from the charts, so you might not hear of another baby with that name for many decades, but suddenly the name will become fresh and new again.”

The expert added that these names are likely to become popular again, but it won’t be any time soon. She said that ‘grandma’ names such as Betty and Mabel have “become vintage cool. So we will definitely see these dad names come back up, but it won’t be for a long time.”

Here are the boy names set to become extinct:

  • Steve
  • Colin
  • Craig
  • Derek
  • Gareth
  • Tyrone
  • Phil
  • Wolfgang
  • Sameer
  • Roger

The name Tyrone may be associated with the Corrie character but it was also used as a given name in Ireland in the past, particularly between the late 70s and mid-2000s. Now, however, it’s practically unheard of with fewer than three babies given the moniker in 2024.

Do you think it’s time for a revival, or should we let this name go extinct?
