Mayo won the All-Ireland final on Sunday — a sentence that still feels surreal to say some 48 hours later — after beating Kerry 1-20 to 1-17 in Croke Park, ending the 75-year drought and the supposed curse that beset the 1951 team which last won Sam Maguire.
Of course, "Green and Red of Mayo" rang out through Croke Park following the triumph, but the Saw Doctors tune hasn’t been contained to just Croker — as it soared to the top of the Spotify charts in Ireland.
The 1992 anthem, which is a favorite of the band’s live shows, saw a resurgence following Mayo’s incredible win — with co-founder Leo Moran admitting that while he didn’t give Mayo much of a chance last Sunday, he was amazed it got such heavy rotation.
"It’s amazing that it’s been adopted so warmly," Leo told TheJournal.ie.
This is the first time the song has reached number 1 since its release all the way back in 1992 as part of their second album, "All The Way from Tuam".
Mayo have reached 11 All-Ireland finals since their last win — 13 if you count replays — and came up agonizingly short each and every time. The last final they appeared in previously was in 2021, where they lost to Tyrone.
The final two members of the 1951 panel, Paddy Prendergast and unused sub Mick Loftus, died in 2021 and 2023 respectively.
This was the first final Mayo appeared in since the entire panel passed away, with fate finally on their side after they pulled off an incredible comeback against firm favorites Kerry, who were chasing their 40th All-Ireland title.

Forward and second-generation Mayo player Kobe McDonald, whose father Ciarán made the All-Ireland final three times without a win, is set to take his talents to Aussie Rules next month after signing for St Kilda in Melbourne.
