Although the luxury hotel, Dromoland Castle in County Clare, is closed for Christmas the staff opened its doors for U2’s Edge and Bono as they were stranded by a snow storm on Monday night.

The stars travel arrangements had been disrupted by the heavy snow and so U2’s management contacted the 16th Century castle to see if they could accommodate some VIPs. A luxury suite in the hotel usually costs €950 a night.

The manager at the castle Mark Nolan told the Irish Independent “Principal Management told us the band had been flying back to Ireland from the latest leg of their tour in Australia. But because of snow their flight had been diverted to Shannon.

Bono had asked if it was possible to spend a night in Dromoland Castle before returning to Dublin."

Mr Nolan told the management team he would see what could be done and phoned around the staff in the area who were on their Christmas holidays.

"No one said no, in fact we were inundated with requests from staff to help out, unsurprisingly," said Mr Nolan.

However, Dromoland Castle’s kitchen almost remained shut as the head chef was away. Mr Nolan enlisted the help of his wife to help on the catering front. Mrs Nolan provided the band and their entourage with a family-sized shepherd’s pie.

The group which arrived included ten road crew and bass guitarist Chris Wolstenholme from English rock band Muse, who had been the support act on the Australian leg of U2's tour.

A trad band entertained the group with Bono joining in to some Irish airs. The party went on late into the night with the group being joined by the staff of the castle.

The next morning, after having a home-cooked breakfast, the group caught a train to Dublin’s Heuston Station.

Pamela Foley, rooms division manager at Dromoland Castle, said “U2 were the nicest people you ever could meet and very engaging. They were especially appreciative of the efforts the staff at Dromoland had made. We would happily welcome U2 back anytime."

Former guests at the Castle include Bill Clinton, George W and John Travolta. U2 will begin the next leg of the “360 Tour” in Johannesburg, South Africa, on February 13.
