On a recent appearance on "The Graham Norton" show in the UK, fellow Corkonian Graham Norton asked Cillian Murphy a question which, no doubt, the actor felt slightly mortified to have to answer, as he was seated on the famous sofa beside none other than Taylor Swift.

That question was about his time in a band, way back in the 90s, before his acting career took off.

Cillian Murphy was part of a jazz band known as "The Sons of Mr Green Genes," named after a Frank Zappa song. They were what is best described as an acid-jazz band, a blend of jazz, funk, and rock, and Murphy fronted the band as both lead vocalist and guitarist.

The embarrassment showed on his face as he revealed that his band had been offered a five-album deal, which surprised the other guests on the show and drew gasps of delight from billionaire songstress Taylor Swift.

Meanwhile, Murphy’s new movie, "Steve," opened in cinemas this past week and was released on Netflix on October 3.

It’s a hard-hitting movie set in Stanton Wood, a school for troubled youth in the 1990s, and while it’s not an easy watch, it’s very compelling. The movie showcases the versatility and skill of Cillian Murphy as an actor, as he plays a beleaguered, exhausted teacher trying to save these teenage boys from themselves.

The movie also stars Tracey Ullman as Amanda and Emily Watson as Jenny.

The website Rotten Tomatoes gives a very positive review of the movie, and describes it as "a sobering drama that throws everything, along with the kitchen sink, at its doggedly determined hero. Steve’s pileup of crises can strain credulity, but Cillian Murphy’s superb performance keeps it grounded in reality".
