She is the first woman to nab the first job in the one hundred and ninety-year history of the prestigious Dublin school.
Elaine has worked as a teacher in a number of different educational environments, including DEIS, before taking up the role at the school, which currently has 770 pupils, and described the appointment as a privilege.
Elaine said in a statement: "I am very honoured to be the first female principal of a school that has given so much to its community and its students - past and present.
"I recognise the significance of this decision made by the school's Board of Management.

Elaine's passion for education sees her pledge to nurture the growth of all students, in an intellectual, academic, physical, spiritual and moral sense.
Over the years, some of the most recognisable names in the country have attended Castknock College.
That list includes former Taoiseach Liam Cosgrove, playwright Eugene McCabe, and Irish rugby star Devin Toner.
