Celebrate love, loyalty and friendship with Fallers, Galway’s premier family-run jewellers, as they celebrate 140 years in business

Fallers Jewellers are renowned makers of Galway’s most famous jewellery piece, the Claddagh ring. The history of the Claddagh ring dates back some four hundred years. Richard Joyce, a gold and silversmith from Galway is attributed with the original design of the Claddagh ring. Established in 1879 by Stephen Faller, the young German Watch and Clockmakers quickly gained the reputation for a great quality and selection across both fine jewelry and timepieces. Today, the Faller family continue on the traditions and celebrate some 140 years in the jewelry business.

With the changing times, the Faller name has remained focal for delivering the finest manufactured Galway Claddagh rings and jewelry worldwide and to their loyal home market customer. Today, along with a fantastic collection of Irish made jewelry, Fallers showcases the finest jewelry designers with some top designer names such as Swarovski, Thomas Sabo, Links of London, Ti ‘Sento Milano and many more. Walking into the store on Williamsgate Street is like walking into a treasure trove.

In 1899, Stephen Faller, by now a successful businessman decided to move his business to a street further up the town away from the hubbub of the market area. His foresight was rewarded as his new shop on Williamsgate Street began to flourish. Fallers unique commitment to quality and craftsmanship carried the business successfully through difficult times whilst Ireland fought for its Independence, and then fought through the Great Depression.

By the 1960s Galway was changing and so indeed was Fallers. At this stage, Stephens’s grandson Cornelius had taken over the reins and his time in charge saw Fallers make groundbreaking strides.

For a start, so as to accommodate a much larger and demanding clientele, Fallers bought the shop adjoining their store (Forkins Drapery) and extended it into a giftware shop selling mainly Waterford Crystal. Fallers Jewellers were now renowned manufacturers of the Claddagh ring and presented John Fitzgerald Kennedy and his wife Jackie Kennedy with Claddagh rings upon their visit to Galway in 1963.

In the 1980s, Fallers were the largest jewelry mail order business in Ireland offering a huge range of products. With the increase in trans-Atlantic tourists to Ireland, Fallers became one of the largest manufacturers of Irish made jewelry. In 1986 Paul Faller became the fourth generation Faller family to run the company. In 1995 Fallers jewellers launched one of the first Irish jewelery and giftware websites.

The launch of www.fallers.com was to showcase the finest selection in Claddagh and Celtic jewelry. In 2005 the store went under major refurbishment and changes to the front of the store allowed Faller’s to showcase the large selection of jewelry across their range of diamond engagement rings, top jewelry brands, leading Irish designers and some of the finest collections in ladies and gent’s watches.

Today the fifth generation of Faller family are working and learning the jewelry manufacturing traditions handed down generation to generation. The store on Williamsgate street went under major refurbishment in order to increase the showcase areas in store. In 2016 Fallers relaunched the successful e-commerce websites.
