The Glengarrif, Co. Cork home of legendary Irish actress Maureen O’Hara is currently on the market for $2.38 million (€2.1 million).
The estate, called Lugdine Park, is described as O’Hara’s “beloved, private retreat away from the limelight” for nearly 45 years. The 35 acre property went on the market last October after the star of "The Quiet Man" and so many other Hollywood classics moved to Idaho to live with her grandson and his family.
O’Hara purchased Lugdine with her late husband Charles Blair in 1970, and used it as a holiday home until 2005 when she moved there permanently. The property is just outside the town of Glengarrif, on the Cork/Kerry border, and affords spectacular seafront views.
In addition to the main house there is a cottage, a private bathing beach, and two private islands. The grounds of the estate are located close to Glengarrif Golf Course and include more than 30 "ladies" walks to choose from.
The house has previous history, too. It was built in 1935 by the son of businessman William Martin Murphy who created the Irish Independent newspaper and who was at the center of the 1913 Lockout.
In a previous interview, O’Hara told the Irish Times that she had wonderful and treasured memories of the spot.
“I have too many wonderful memories of Glengarriff to pick just one. One is starting my golf tournament that goes on every summer. All of us, the whole village, pulled together to get it going. And it still is today. You miss Ireland for all your life when you leave. I miss looking out my bedroom window at the boats coming in and eating at Casey’s.”
