Families, groups, and solo travellers are invited to enjoy Limerick Greenway on their terms. Whether it’s a quiet morning stroll or a full-day cycling adventure, the trail is designed for every pace and ability. With five visitor hub destinations — Rathkeale, Ardagh, Newcastle West, Barnagh, and Abbeyfeale — visitors can easily start where it suits them, rent bikes, enjoy a coffee, or simply take in the view.
Purpose-built for accessibility, Limerick Greenway features wide, level surfaces and modern facilities, welcoming users of all ages and mobility levels.
History, Nature & Local Charm
As you journey through West Limerick, you’ll do more than admire the landscape; you’ll walk in the footsteps of history. Restored features like the Barnagh Tunnel, Ferguson’s Viaduct, and original station houses bring the old Limerick–Tralee railway to life.
Nature lovers will enjoy wildflowers, birdsong, and the peace of rural Ireland, all within reach of modern comforts and friendly communities. It’s no wonder visitors return again and again to this blend of recreation and reflection.
Limerick Greenway also offers a rich variety of attractions. In Rathkeale, visit the Irish Palatine Heritage Centre, which tells a story shared with many Irish American families. Ardagh features the historic ring fort linked to the discovery of the famous Ardagh Chalice.
In Newcastle West, explore the 15th-century Desmond Castle, then enjoy artisan shops and cafés located in the town centre. Barnagh Hub is a hit with families, featuring a café, playground, crazy golf, and stunning views. At Abbeyfeale, savour local bakeries and traditional pubs. On the square of the market town, you will find Leens Hotel, who are known for their great hospitality and delicious restaurant menu. Continue on your journey from there to Listowel.
The Perfect Base
Limerick Greenway isn’t just a trail; it’s the perfect base for your Irish adventure. Located close to Shannon, Kerry, and Cork airports, and less than three hours from Dublin, West Limerick offers easy access to the Wild Atlantic Way, Kerry’s coast, and Clare’s cliffs.
As part of the EuroVelo Atlantic Coast Route (EV1), Limerick Greenway connects to Limerick City as well as a wider network of European cycling trails, ideal for those seeking an extended adventure.
A Welcome Like No Other
Whether you’re visiting Ireland for the first time or returning to your roots, Limerick Greenway offers a warm, off-the-beaten-path experience — a chance to reconnect with nature, heritage, and community.
“We see visitors from all over the world here, and there’s nothing like the joy on their faces when they see this part of Ireland for the first time,” says Máire O’Sullivan, a café owner near Barnagh. “There’s real peace, real conversation, and of course — a hot cup of tea or a pint waiting for you at the end. That’s the céad míle fáilte we’re proud to offer here in West Limerick.”
