The mystery of who would fill the quarterback position at Notre Dame came to an end this week with the naming of senior Dayne Crist as starter.
It wasn't an earth shattering surprise since the race had always been between Crist and sophomore Tommy Rees.
With Crist and Rees, it's the devil you know. They've both had game experience, have handled the pressures of the game and both are constantly improving their game.
Crist is certainly athletic, but he has had both knees surgically repaired in consecutive years, and Kelly is for that reason reluctant to see him running.
Kelly wants a quarterback that can run, but one that can win now too. It's still by no means clear who the victor will be in the end.
Meanwhile Golson and Hendrick wait in the wings for their opportunity to shine.Given Crist's injury- prone nature one of them may find themselves in the back up position. Kelly may well use them especially Golson in particular situations. With his great speed he's a wildcat option definitely.
