The Mayobridge native is yet to feature this season for the Saints, who signed former Las Vegas Raiders All-Pro Daniel Carlson over the offseason. Charlie Smyth was released and put on the practice squad in August, despite signing a three-year deal with the franchise in December.
Carlson was released at the start of the week after a patchy run of form, making only 8 of his 12 field goal attempts for a team sitting at 2-5 at the bottom of the NFC South.
Charlie Smyth will now return to kicking duties this weekend when the New Orleans Saints face the Cleveland Browns. "Charlie will kick this week," New Orleans Saints Head Coach Kellen Moore told the media on Wednesday.
"Tough decisions. Daniel’s made some really good kicks for us; I think it’s just the consistency thing. It felt like this was the best decision for our football team moving forward.
"These things are never easy, but Charlie’s done this for us back in the last year, so he’ll be ready to go."

However, despite their poor record, they still have a chance of making the playoffs if they win their division, only one win behind the trio of Carolina Panthers, Tampa Bay Buccaneers, and Atlanta Falcons at the top of the division.
Charlie Smyth made 75% of his 16 field goal attempts he took in his six-game spell last season, including a game-winner against the Carolina Panthers. The former Downkeeper also made all 13 of his extra point attempts.
The New Orleans Saints face the Cleveland Browns this Sunday, November 8, at the Caesars Superdome in New Orleans, with kick-off at 6 pm Irish time.
