So much for the tabloid predictions.

For months tabloid headlines had been screaming about an imminent break-up between Rory McIlroy and girlfriend Caroline Wozniacki.

The Irish and Danish couple were on the rocks, gonzo, kaput, finito, splitsville in dozens of different languages.

Until they weren’t.

Rory McIlroy and Caroline Wozniacki made it official on New Year’s Eve when he popped the question and she said yes-- and the tabloids had to settle for  Danish delight for breakfast.

They knew nothing until after the fact.

Of course they used Twitter to announce their engagement while they were celebrating the New Year in Australia.

Not a tabloid report in sight. The men in grey macs with long lenses must have been disgusted that Wozzilroy weren’t wrecking their home lives and splitting up.

The two, former No.1s in golf and tennis respectively have over 2 million followers on Twitter between them. The tabloids have dubbed them “Wozzilroy”

The couple tweeted pictures of Caroline wearing an engagement ring alongside a picture of the fireworks over Sydney Harbor Bridge.

The Northern Irish golfer and current world number six told his followers: "Happy New Year everyone! I have a feeling it's going to be a great year!! My first victory of 2014 #shesaidyes!!"

Danish-born tennis star Wozniacki (23) tweeted a similar  pictures and a tweet saying: "Rory and I started 2014 with a bang!...I said YES!!!!"

The pair started dating in the summer of 2011.their relationship coincided with a complete loss of form for both and much criticism that their love affair was hurting their careers.

Rumors have been rampant that they were splitting up but they have now been put to rest by this latest news.

Australia is a happy hunting ground for Rory, he recently won the Australian Open there which could signal a comeback.

Now with his beloved by his side he could become master of the golf universe again in 2014.
