Notre Dame tight end Mike Ragone was arrested at the weekend and charged with misdemeanor possession of marijuana, throwing his college football career into some doubt.
The 22-year-old was arrested Sunday when a police officer found marijuana in the purse of a female companion in his car.
Notre Dame has confirmed that Coach Brian Kelly has been updated about his player.
"Coach [Brian] Kelly is aware of the situation and feels it is a serious matter," said Brian Hardin, Notre Dame director of football media relations. "He has spoken with Mike, but any team-related action that may be forthcoming would be handled internally."
Ragone’s future on the playing field is in the hands of Notre Dame’s Office of Residence Life.
The school suspended a basketball player for a similar incident in the 2007-2008 season and Ragone could face a similar suspension or, worst case scenario, permanent dismissal, according to the school’s student handbook.
