Shane Lowry played his first round as a professional golfer on Thursday at the European Open at the London Golf Club in Kent, shooting a six-over-par 78.

The 22-year-old got off to a rough start, going four over for the first six holes with bogeys on 1 and 4 and a double bogey at the par 4 sixth.

Lowry, who was playing with fellow Irishman Paul McGinley, got one back with a birdie at 7, but immediately gave it back with a bogey at the par 5 eighth. A par on the ninth saw the burly Offaly man go out in 40.

The back nine saw Lowry bogey 11, 14 and 17 and only get one birdie on the par 5 15th to end the round with a 78, or six-over-par.

Lowry will have some work to Friday if he is to make the cut for the first time as a pro, as first round leader Anders Hansen is seven under par after shooting a 65.
