DONEGAL ….............. 2-11
MAYO ….................... . 0-13
Jimmy’s winning matches and Donegal are winning trophies - Michael Murphy lifted Sam Maguire at Croke Park to end a 20-year-wait.
Donegal are All-Ireland champions again after Jim McGuinness, a player on their only previous winning team in 1992, tasted success as a manager.
The boss, celebrated in the song ‘Jimmy’s winning matches’, received a huge round of applause when captain Murphy thanked him from the presentation rostrum at Croker.
And Donegal fans at home and abroad erupted with happiness when Murphy lifted Sam and declared: “We got him”.
The big full-forward played a real captain’s part with a personal tally of 1-4 as Donegal ensured another All-Ireland final day defeat for Mayo.
Murphy made his intentions clear when he netted a thunderbolt after just four minutes.
A second goal seven minutes later from Colm McFadden ensured Mayo were always going to face an uphill climb.
The Connacht champions did rally as Cillian O’Connor and Kevin McLoughlin threatened to drag them back into the game.
Two O’Connor points helped as they cut the Donegal lead to three points, 2-4 to 0-7, at the break.
O’Connor ended up with five points to his credit as Mayo dug deep in the second-half but they just never got close enough to worry the Ulster men.
And fittingly it was a couple of points from Murphy in the final quarter that ensured Mayo left Dublin empty handed once again.
