Get ready for the annual celebrations for Bloomsday across the world, this Friday- June 16th.

Leopold Bloomsday has become significant since James Joyce wrote his epic novel, Ulysess. The beloved novelist has given the Irish another St.Patrick and another day to celebrate which is widely recognized across the world.

From tracing Leopold Bloom’s journey through the streets of Dublin, to Irish breakfasts in Bryant Park New York, to Guinness sessions in Hungary, there are plenty of ways this day is celebrated.

1. Dublin

Bloomsday is celebrated every year in Dublin by James Joyce fans who dress in Edwardian costume to create an atmosphere of the time when Ulysess was set- 1904. Fans follow the route taken by Bloom throughout Dublin City.

Readings and dramatisations from the novel are held at various stages by performers.

2. New York

A number of different celebrations take place in New York on this day. A breakfast is held in Bryant Park- consisting of Irish foods. People dress in Edwardian clothing and listen to Irish music.

The Syracuse James Joyce Club perform an annual presentation of ‘Ulysess’ at the Grewen Hall Auditorium on the LeMoyne College Campus.

3. Los Angeles

Bloomsday at  the Hammer Museum will hold its 3rd annual celebration of Bloomsday this year. It is set in the Dublin newspaper of the Freemans Journal and Evening Telegraph where Leopold Bloom and Stephen Dedalus almost met face to face.

Actor reads take place and Guinness Happy Hour gets in full swing.

4. San Francisco


Held in Mechanics Institute, dramatic readings and performances take place.

Traditional Irish music, song and dance enhance the celebration along with some Irish cuisine.

5. Australia

6. Croatia

7. Italy

The first part of Ulysess was written in Trieste, Italy.

To celebrate the occasion, the Museo Joyce Museum and the Trieste Joyce School in collaboration with Day Dreaming Project present A Party of Joyce. It features an entertaining celebration of Joyce's novel in the city in which it was first conceived.

8. Zurich

James Joyce is buried in Zuribergs Fluntein cemetery, Zurich. A statue of James Joyce can be found in Zurich also.

9. Hungary

The world’s most unusual Bloomsday takes place in Szombathely, western Hungary, on the border of Austria.

It was started by a small group of scholars and artists who met informally to revive over drinks and the anarchic spirit of Joyce.
