On Friday May 10, 2013, the 408-foot spire was placed on top of One World Trade Center symbolically capping the building, a symbol of New York’s comeback post 9/11.

The clever folk at the Port Authority strapped a camera to the spire as it was raised into position 1,776 feet above Manhattan.

Construction of the building began in 2006 following the city’s recovery from the 2001 terrorist attacks. It now stands at 1,776 feet, a nod to the years the United States declared independence. One World Trade Center now stands as the tallest skyscraper in the western hemisphere and the third-tallest in the world.

Over the years IrishCentral have spoken to those Irish construction workers who worked on the building throughout, therefore we found it fitting that as the spire is being moved into position you can hear the brave (and possibly mad) men on the crane shouting out to each other: “John!” “Kevin, you got it!” We wonder where their families hail from!
