An Irish-American shot his Irish-born close friend then killed himself in a tragic outcome to a personal dispute in Indianapolis that police have linked to an extra martial affair.

John Caffrey shot Derek Tully dead in the latter’s home then turned his gun on himself.

Indianapolis police believe a dispute between the pair – friends of Tully have denied it was over an extra-marital affair – led to the deaths.

Tully, a 50-year-old from Ballyfermot in Dublin, had been living in the area for the past 25 years.

Caffrey, born in Illinois but brought up in Ireland, was a close friend of Tully’s for a number of years.

The 48-year-old Caffrey arrived at Tully’s home late on Sunday night and shot his friend a number of times. He then left the house and shot himself.

The Irish Independent reports that, in a 911 call released to Indianapolis media, a local man said: “I just had a neighbour of mine call, who’s had some marital difficulties, and tell me her husband just committed a murder-suicide, and then the phone went dead.”

Police, who rushed to the suburban house on Courageous Drive, discovered the bodies of the two men who were pronounced dead at the scene.

Tully’s sister-in-law, who did not wish to be named, told the paper that reports that the men had had a row over an extramarital affair were incorrect.

Asked if the two men had a dispute, she said: “Derek wouldn’t describe it that way.”

However local police told the Indianapolis Star newspaper that they believed an extramarital affair was likely the cause of the shooting

Tully’s family are due to arrive in America on Thursday ahead of his funeral on Saturday. A father of two, he was married to Barbara Ann Smith for 27 years and had been working as Assistant Manager of Technical Services at the Speech, Language and Hearing Sciences Department at Purdue University.

Friends paid tribute to Tully on social network sites.  “Kyle and I will remember Derek as being full of life and passionate about the things he loved to do,” wrote Vidya Krull of Greenwood, Indiana.

Caffrey, 48, was also a father of two. He was born in Illinois, grew up in Dublin and studied Electrical Engineering in the city before moving back to the US. He was a volunteer with the Holy Family Shelter in Indianapolis as well as a soccer coach.
