THE murders in the farmhouse home they shared in Co. Kerry of a 60-year-old widower and his 27-year-old bachelor son have stunned Ireland.Michael Hanrahan and his son Denis, both, described as pillars of the community in the village of Moyvane where they lived, were shot dead while still in their pajamas early on Thursday of last week.More that 60 Gardai (police) took part in the search for both the murder weapon and a motive in the early stages of the investigation before a man from a neighboring village walked into a police station on Sunday and was later charged with both murders in court.Moyvane is unused to the sight of fleets of police vehicles with over-flying helicopter above the quiet surrounding countryside. Nor has it, in any local's memory, played host to as many reporters and cameramen as descended on it last week. But then, it never before knew the tragedy of a double murder. It never had to grieve for two such well-loved and highly-respected members of the tightly-knit community.Parish priest Father John Lucid, who gave the Last Rites to the two men, said Moyvane was in shock. He recalled how Michael Hanrahan was always in church 20 minutes before Mass time, praying quietly.Michael was an active member of Moyvane Development Association which he helped to form more than 20 years ago. He was a dairy farmer and the village correspondent for The Kerryman newspaper. He was widowed 12 years ago when his wife Ann died from breast cancer.Cops ceased their search for a suspect when 30-year-old Thomas Barrett from the nearby village of Causeway walked into Tralee Garda station last Saturday night and told officers he wanted to help with their inquiries. On Monday he appeared in court charged with the murders of the two men. Dressed in navy jacket, striped shirt and jeans, he sat in silence throughout the brief, three-minute hearing, his arms folded across his chest. The court heard that when formally charged with the killings Barrett replied "no."As Barrett, who was known by the Hanrahan family, was being escorted from court to be held in jail pending further hearings, he was jeered by a crowd of 80 onlookers. His alleged victims were buried on Wednesday this week, April 2, following a funeral Mass at the Church of the Assumption, Moyvane. The mourners included Denis' twin Shane and their sisters Kayrena, Marion and Aine.
