Irish sporting legend Roy Keane was involved in an altercation at the Republic of Ireland’s team hotel on Dublin’s north side which resulted in police being called.

Keane is Assistant Manager of Ireland, which plays a critical European Championship game against Scotland on Friday.

A man received medical treatment at the hotel after the incident in the bar area which involved the controversial Keane.

The Football Association of Ireland said in a statement that Keane called the police after the incident.

"We wish to clarify that Roy Keane called the gardai following the incident," the statement read.

"The manager, Martin O'Neill and the FAI are fully aware of the circumstances surrounding this event, and the assistant manager has their full support."

A police source told Independent.ie the matter was under investigation. "This matter is being investigated by gardai, but a complaint must be received for further action to be considered in the case," a senior source said.

Portmarnock Hotel and Golf Links where the team is staying would not comment on the incident.
