Around 5,000 people turned out in New York on Saturday for the annual Luck of the Irish Pub Crawl – apparently breaking the Guinness World Record for the largest pub crawl.

The pub crawl’s organizers expect confirmation soon that the previous pub crawl record has been broken.

“We believe we have won,” said Eddie Miller on Monday, the owner of St.Patty’s.com, the pub crawl organizers. “We’re 95 percent certain we’re there.”

The crawl started on Saturday and also took place on Sunday. Drinkers were given the day off on Monday for recovery, before things start up again on Tuesday, for St. Patrick’s Day. Tickets for one day are $20, while a three-day ticket costs $30.

Over 100 bars are taking part in pub crawl, which takes place over five miles, mainly along Third Avenue, from the East Village to the Upper East Side.

To be counted as a pub crawler, drinkers must go to at least ten bars, and have at least one drink in each. They get a card stamped in the bar to prove they’ve purchased a drink.

Miller said that his company, which runs pub crawls for various occasions, flew officials out from the U.K from the Guinness World Records to adjudicate on their record-breaking attempt.

“We also hired some little people to dress up as leprechauns and take pictures,” he added.

One pub crawler, 25-year-old Ashleigh Wolkoff, was feeling pretty rough Monday morning – but happy nonetheless.

“It was a great day – a total drunk fest,” she said. “True, I was feeling pretty hungover today. But hopefully, all that time and effort we put in will pay off. “

Wolkoff said that she recently lost her job because of the recession – “So I’ll be ready to get right back out there on the crawl for St. Patrick's Day.”
