Irish American Republicans have confirmed that there is a pledge in the Republican platform to continue the special U.S. envoy to Ireland.
That contrasts with last week's statement by Senator Barack Obama that he was unsure whether the special envoy role would need to continue.
It is believed that the new pledge was entered into the Republican platform by supporters of GOP nominee Senator John McCain after the Obama statement became public.
Irish American Republicans are also preparing to host an Irish official convention reception in Minnesota on Thursday.
Jeff Cleary, president of the Irish American Republicans group, told the Irish Voice from Minnesota on Tuesday that a large crowd is expected to gather at the reception.
Former New York Governor George Pataki is expected to attend, along with the Irish Ambassador to the U.S. Michael Collins.
"There are many officials invited and expected to attend the reception," said Cleary, who is also the president of the Irish Lobby for Immigration Reform.
