The Irish mother, Nicole Ryan Graham, is “chuffed” to have stood for 12 minutes having spent eight weeks in a coma following a horrific car accident in Kansas a year ago.

Since her accident the mother, originally from Moyross in Limerick and Meelick, Co Clare, has had to learn how to eat, speak and stand again.

Her mother, Caroline, spoke to the Evening Herald about her joy at seeing her daughter stand in a pair of special orthopedic boots.

She said “Nicole is doing really well. She got her new boots and she stood for 12 minutes, she was chuffed with herself, so a good start to a new year."

On February 8 last year Nicole was a passenger in a car which last control and slammed into a wall on a highway in Kansas. The road conditions were hazardous.

By August Nicole’s memory had returned and she recognized her three young daughters Kendra, Katie and Kellsey. In November she received a visit from the man who dragged her from the wreckage of the car crash.

For the past five months she has made huge improvements at the Meadowbrook Rehab Center in Gardner, Kansas.

The accident took place while Nicole was between jobs and therefore was without insurance. The crash took place five days after her insurance ran out.

Her family in Limerick and friends in Kansas have been involved in a variety of fundraising efforts. She now have a hospital bill of over $1 million.
