A FATHER of a Co. Derry man who died in Minnesota in December said he believes his son was afraid to seek medical treatment for fear of being deported.John Thompson, father of John from Garvagh, Co. Derry, told the BBC recently that his 34-year-old son died while he and his wife were en route to see him. They arrived in St. Paul, Minnesota to the body of their dead son.Thompson, who lived and worked in Minnesota for seven years, was undocumented. He was sick for the best part of a week but told his parents he didn't want to go to hospital. He eventually got so sick that on December 22 he gave in, but died later that evening. "He thought it was a stomach bug he had. He kept saying, 'I'll be all right tomorrow, I'll be all right tomorrow,'" his father told the BBC. "By Friday he had sort of come round, but on Friday night he took very bad and by the time they got him to hospital on Saturday he was so dehydrated, his blood pressure dropped, his organs all began to fail and his heart stopped and he died."Thompson's father is certain the reason he didn't go to the hospital sooner was for fear of his status being discovered. "I know that's the reason why he didn't go to hospital," he said.A heartbroken father pleaded with parents of undocumented to encourage their children to go to the hospital when they become ill. Life is too important he said. "Let your children know if they are sick, go to the hospital, go to the doctor," he begged.
