The former Ambassador to Ireland, Thomas Foley, is expected to announce shortly if he is to run in 2010 for the U.S Senate in the state of Connecticut.
That seat is currently held by the Democrat’s Christopher Dodd. Foley, who was ambassador to Ireland from 2006 to January 2009, is a Republican.
A friend of Foley’s, political consultant Rob Cole, told Connecticut’s Harford Courant that the former ambassador was "weighing his options."
"He'll be making a decision in the weeks and months ahead," Cole, who served as deputy director for Mitt Romney’s campaign, said.
Should Foley go ahead with the race, he will also be up against two fellow Republicans: former U.S. Rep. Rob Simmons and state Sen. Sam S.F. Caligiuri, who have said that they would run in the senatorial election.
Foley is currently on his honeymoon, having married Leslie Ann Fahrenkopf, a vice president at News Corporation, in Celbridge, County Kildare, Ireland, last month.
