A study released by Bing looking at the ten most searched news stories of 2011 showed that the Casey Anthony Trial was the most popular story of the year, followed by Osama Bin Laden's death.

The study was based on billions of search queries followed by Bing. It covered the categories, people, sports, musicians, consumer electronics, TV shows, movies, celebrity events, destinations, and "other interesting searches,” according to Bing.

In the news category that Casey Anthony and Osama Bin Laden topped, the rest of the top ten were:

3. Hurricane Irene
4. The Japan earthquake/tsunami
5. Amy Winehouse's death
6. the Joplin tornado
7. the Michael Jackson trial,
8. the 10th anniversary of 9/11
9. GOP candidates Herman Cain and Rick Perry
10. the one year anniversary of the Haiti earthquake

Other notable rankings were Justin Bieber as the most searched  person and musician, Maria Sharapova as the most searched athlete, American Idol as the most searched show, and the Royal Wedding as the most searched celebrity event.
