Anthony McGinn has been charged with dangerous driving causing the death of teenagers Kiea McCann and Dlava Mohamed in Co Monaghan last July.

McGinn, aged in his 60s and with an address in Co Monaghan, appeared before Monaghan District Court on Monday morning, March 11, in connection with the fatal road crash that occurred in Legnakelly, Co Monaghan, on July 31, 2023.

He is charged with dangerous driving causing the deaths of McCann, 17, and Mohamed, 16.

He is also charged with dangerous driving causing serious bodily harm to another person.

McGinn, who was the driver of the vehicle, has been granted bail for six weeks and will appear before the court again on April 22. The court was told that the state will present the book of evidence on that date.

Garda Sergeant Thomas Leonard from Clones Garda Station told Judge Raymond Finnegan that he arrested McGinn at 7:55 am on Monday and brought him to Monaghan Garda Station, where he was charged at 9:35 am.

Garda Sergeant Lisa McEntee told the court that the Director of Public Prosecutions has directed that the case be heard by the Circuit Court, meaning that McGinn's trial will take place in front of a judge and jury.

McGinn has been charged under the Road Traffic Act 1961 and the maximum penalty at Circuit Court level is a five-year prison term.

Several members of Kiea McCann's family were present as McGill appeared in court on Monday morning.

McCann and her best friend Dlava Mohamed were killed when the car they were traveling in hit a tree on the N54 national road at Legnakelly near Clones. The two teenagers were on their way to the Largey College School Debs at the time of the crash.

Dlava Mohammed's younger sister Avin was also injured in the crash but survived.
