The death of a five-year-old boy in a hotel swimming pool in County Kerry is being treated as a tragic accident by Irish police.

The young boy from Dublin got into difficulty in the water at around 11.30am yesterday morning in the Gleneagle Hotel in Killarney, County Kerry. He was swimming with his father at the time.

Efforts were made to resuscitate him at the scene but he was later pronounced dead at Tralee General Hospital.

The young child, from Ballymun in County Dublin, is thought to have been on vacation with his family when the incident occurred.

In a statement the hotel said they were deeply saddened by the death. They said the swimming pool was fully supervised with two lifeguards and that all appropriate steps were taken.

The ‘Aquila Club Leisure Centre’ where the tragedy occurred includes a 25 meter swimming pool as well as a 10 meter children’s pool.
