U.S. Open Champion Rory McIlroy is in the Twitter wars again – after another American commentator branded him as ‘childish, immature and a spoilt brat’.

The 22-year-old from County Down became embroiled in fresh controversy when he blasted former American tour player Jay Townsend in a Twitter rant after a disappointing first round at the Irish Open.

Mclroy was then dragged into fresh controversy on Friday morning when US based Golf Channel presenter Erik Kuselias described him as ‘a spoilt brat’.

As he prepared to go out for the second round at Killarney, McIlroy refused to comment on the comments made by Kuselias on the Channel’s Morning Drive programme.

Townsend ran the ire of McIlroy when he was critical of his club choice on the final hole on Thursday.

After hitting a three wood off the tee, McIlroy found a fairway bunker and the lake in front of the green before recording a double bogey six.

Former European Tour player Townsend told both the BBC and Twitter that McIlroy was guilty of ‘shocking course management’. He also encouraged McIlroy to sack his caddy JP Fitzgerald and replace him with Tiger Woods’ former bagman Steve Williams.

McIlroy responded on Twitter when he told Townsend to ‘shut up’. He added: “You’re a commentator and a failed golfer, your opinion means nothing.”

The Ulster youngster then found himself in the rough again when the Golf Channel covered the row.

Presenter Kuselias demanded on ‘Morning Drive’ that McIlroy apologies to Townsend.

“This is childish, immature,” said Kuselias. “He comes across as a spoilt brat who feels entitled.

This is dumb from someone we’ve all probably anointed just a little too quickly. I fully expect an apology in the morning.”

McIlroy’s private life has also attracted a lot of media attention this week after the break-up of his relationship with long time girlfriend Holly Sweeney.

He is now dating world tennis number one Caroline Wozniacki.
