The Irish are set to become Europe’s fattest nation over the next 15 years according to a new World Health Organization report.
The WHO has warned that Ireland is on course to top the European fat charts with half of all adults are predicted to be obese by 2030.
The Irish Sun newspaper reports that the figures from a World Health Organization study of 53 Euro-zone countries make for sobering reading.
The WHO report predicts that almost 50 percent of Irish adults will be classified as clinically obese within two decades.
Once figures for those currently overweight are included, then some 90 percent of Irishmen will fall into the obese category.
The WHO report says Irish women are also piling on the pounds. They will also be Europe’s fattest by 2030 with overweight or obesity levels at 84 percent.
Dr Laura Webber of the UK Health Forum in London told the Irish Sun: “The UK and Ireland possess unregulated market economies.
“The actions of multinational food companies to maximize profit encourages over-consumption. Our study presents a worrying picture of rising obesity in Europe.”
