A European weather forecasting service has warned that a tornado could hit Ireland on Monday night.
Estofex, the European Storm Forecast Experiment, has issued a level one warning for tornadoes as heavy winds prepare to batter Ireland again.
The Irish Independent reports that gale force winds are expected to lash the country again.
Forecasters from Estofex said: “A depression with strong pressure gradients is situated in the west of the country.
“A strong wind and low-lifting condensation level is reason to believe that one or multiple tornadoes may occur and severe wind gusts are likely.”
The Estofex grouping is made up of European meteorologists and students in meteorology.
The level one warning - the lowest of three warning levels - indicates there is a five per cent possibility that a tornado will hit Ireland.
Temperatures are rising after the recent cold snap however as spring finally arrives.
Ireland’s national weather service Met Eireann predicts milder temperatures in the coming days but heavy rain and high winds are expected to roll in from the Atlantic on Monday night.
A wind warning was in effect for Munster, Leinster, Connacht and Donegal, Monaghan and Cavan on Sunday with heavy gusts along exposed northern and western coastal areas.
Met Eireann forecaster David Rogers said: “The wind won’t start to show its hand until the evening when the rain pushes in.”
