Irish people are waking up to face more difficulties this morning, as the big freeze continues. Snowfall overnight in east Leinster and western Munster has caused dangerous conditions and long delays for commuters.

Conditions around the country continue to cause the cancellation of sporting and other events, as well as the continued closure of schools.

The overnight snow and freezing conditions caused  a number of cancellations and delays to flights at Dublin Airport, the main runway was reopened at around 7.30am this morning.

Dundrum village in Dublin city was badly effected with many roads impassable.

The main N11 from Dublin to Wexford was described as treacherous this morning, while the main motorway in Dublin city, the M50, was very icy with motorists facing difficulties on the off ramps for exits.

Other parts of the country greatly affected this morning by the plummeting temperatures overnight include Carlow and Kilkenny.

The Irish Farmers Association has criticized local authorities for refusing to supply farmers with grit to allow them to clear minor and secondary roads.

Public transport was badly affected again today. Swift ferry sailings between Dublin and Holyhead have been canceled. Dublin's tram system is operating as normal. Dublin Bus and Bus Éireann passengers were asked to check respective websites. The majority of rail services are expected to run as scheduled.

Gardaí continue to advise people against any unnecessary journeys.

Weather forecaster with Met Éireann,  Evelyn Cusack warned yesterday's thaw would not last.

"Colder air will move across Ireland and we do expect a resumption of very cold conditions," she said. "We don't expect the slush to freeze, but on Wednesday (today) and Thursday, most of the country will be very bad with temperatures falling as low as minus-10C.

"High pressure will lead to severe frost. The snow won't melt in the midlands but will on the east coast. There's a high danger on Wednesday night and Thursday morning of freezing fog. We don't expect a huge amount of snow, but the wind will be gone and temperatures will fall."

Met Éireann has warned that Leinster and Munster can expecy up to four inches of snow in the next day, while temperatures could drop to -10'C overnight. They have predicted that the cold spell could continue until early next week.
