Tom Vaughan Lawlor set to star in "The Secret Scripture."

Nidge lives! Or at least the actor who portrays him does, as Tom Vaughan-Lawlor has landed a role in a big screen adaptation of Irish writer Sebastian Barry’s best-selling novel "The Secret Scripture."

Lawlor is a familiar sight in homes all over Ireland because of his star turn in commercial and critical sensation ‘Love/Hate,’ an RTÉ drama. With season five of the hit crime drama recently wrapped and Lawlor’s character Nidge six feet under, his casting in ‘The Secret Scripture’ marks his first big shot at a career on the silver screen. Lawlor is currently appearing as Irish political advisor and Senator P.J. Mara in ‘Charlie,’ an RTÉ historical mini-series based on the life of controversial Taoiseach (Prime Minister) Charlie Haughey.

‘The Secret Scripture’ will be directed by famed Irish director Jim Sheridan, best known for his seminal Irish films ‘My Left Foot,’ ‘In the Name of the Father’ and ‘In America.’ The screenplay was written by the late Johnny Ferguson, who adapted it from Sebastian Barry’s 2008 best seller.

The story follows Roseanne McNulty, a one hundred year old woman in the County Roscommon Regional Mental Hospital, who decides to write an autobiography of her life. A second narrative follows a doctor in the hospital, and as their stories begin to dovetail the true reason behind Roseanne’s fifty year incarceration in the home comes to light. The book was a critical hit, winning the 2008 Costa Award, the Irish Book Award and was shortlisted for the Man Booker Prize.

An all-star cast has been assembled for the film. In addition to Tom Vaughan-Lawlor there is the legendary Vanessa Redgrave, Rooney Mara, Eric Bana, Theo James and ‘What Richard Did’ and ‘Transformers’ star Jack Reynor. Expect to see "The Secret Scripture" in late 2015, as it is scheduled to begin filming in the next few months.
