Our unique and beautiful Irish baby names are popular not only here in our own country, but also abroad.
From the US to Australia, and even Scandinavia, parents love borrowing our names for their little ones.
And look, we totally get it. In the UK right now, there is one Irish name in particular that is proving popular with new parents – Nolan.
According to baby name website Nameberry, this baby name descends from an Irish surname that means fame, noble, and champion.
There is no denying that many Irish baby names have become popular in the UK over the years, and according to Netmums, the name Nolan has been making waves over the years, initially deriving from the surname, O’Nuallain, which was later anglicised to become ‘Nolan.’
Since then, ‘Nolan’ has gained popularity as a first name not only here, but across the world. Currently, the classic Irish moniker is sitting within the top 100 baby names list in the US.
And as well as the United States and the UK, the name has also slowly increased in popularity with French and Canadian parents.
Since then, the name has also taken off in France and Canada. It is now gaining popularity in England, too, according to Nameberry.
The name Nolan originates from the Irish language and is thought to signify ‘little king’ or ‘descendant of the king’, making it a strong and admirable option for parents.
In fact, it traces back to the Irish name Ríán, which remains popular in Ireland today.
They love Ériu too
Speaking of Irish names making waves abroad, it seems UK parents love the name Ériu.
This moniker, of course, means Ireland and has deep roots in Celtic history.
Inspired by the goddess of Ireland, a significant female figure linked to authority and influence, the tale of Ériu tells of her and her sisters possessing intuitive abilities, foreseeing an invasion of Ireland. They thwarted the Milesians, leading to Ireland being named in honour of Ériu.
