Today, November 11, Veterans Day is observed in the United States. It's a day to honor those who have served in the US Armed Forces. Fittingly Guinness’ installment in their “Made of More” series of adverts celebrates veterans as heroes, their place in the community and their strength of character.

Entitled the “Empty Chair” it centers on a local bar where the owner and her patrons hold a special vigil as they wait for for one of their own. The short clip is a paean to the spirit of service that has made America great.

Veterans Day, Armistice Day and Remembrance Day in other parts of the world, marks the anniversary of the end of World War I (on the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month of 1918).

President Woodrow Wilson first proclaimed Armistice Day for November 11, 1919. He said, “To us in America, the reflections of Armistice Day will be filled with solemn pride in the heroism of those who died in the country's service and with gratitude for the victory, both because of the thing from which it has freed us and because of the opportunity it has given America to show her sympathy with peace and justice in the councils of the nations.”
