Irish actor Patrick Gibson has been cast in a prequel to the popular crime series "Dexter," which follows the titular character's journey to becoming an avenging serial killer.

Gibson, from Dublin, will star as a young Dexter Morgan in the upcoming series, entitled "Dexter: Original Sin." Michael C. Hall played the character in the original series.

Last year, Gibson featured as Nikolai Lantsov in the Netflix series "Shadow and Bone." He also starred as Steve Winchell in "The OA," and has earned renown for his performances in "The Tudors" and "Tolkien."

In 2017, he scooped the Rising Star award at the Irish Film and Television Awards.

Meanwhile, American actor Christian Slater is also set to star in the new series as Dexter's adoptive father Harry Morgan, who works as a homicide detective.

The 10-part series will take place in Miami in 1991, 15 years before the events of the original hit series.

The upcoming prequel will follow Dexter as he learns to channel his bloodthirsty urges, coming up with a code to find and eliminate people he feels deserve to be eliminated from society, staying off law enforcement's radar with the guidance of his father.

Dexter's bloodthirsty urges are challenged when he joins the Miami Metro Police Department as a forensics intern.

"Senior Year" star Molly Brown will also star as Dexter's younger sister Debra in the upcoming series.

Clyde Phillips, who worked on the original Dexter series, is set to return as showrunner and series producer for the upcoming prequel.

The new Showtime series is being produced for Paramount+.

Slater, meanwhile, has received a Golden Globe for his performance in the thriller series "Mr. Robot" and is also known for his breakout performance in "Heathers."

The original "Dexter" series, meanwhile, received widespread critical acclaim and received multiple Emmy and Golden Globe nominations across its eight-season run.
