Manchester United defeated Liverpool in the final of the Guinness Champions Cup in Miami on Monday night.

United came from 1-0 down after Steven Gerard had scored a 14 minute penalty.

Wayne Rooney won the player of the tournament award and also scored before a crowd of 51,000. Jessie Lingard and Juan Mata also scored.

Both teams are owned by American consortiums making the Guinness Cup a welcome opportunity for them to make an impact in the US.

Billy Hogan, Liverpool's Chief Commercial Officer, said the champions cup was a great success."It has worked out and it's been good," Hogan said. "The excitement around the World Cup is noticeable. There is real momentum around this country. We have over 20 million fans in the United States, so this is a great opportunity for us."
