Philip Treacy, the Irish hat designer, has won the commission of a lifetime after Kate Middleton chose him to make the headgear for the Royal Family for her wedding to Prince William.

The 43-year-old Galway native was summoned to Buckingham Palace to meet with Middleton after she made the call.

He has previously designed hats for the bride-to-be and she has worn them to several high profile events, including William’s graduation from Sandhurst military college.

The Galway designer began making hats with duck feathers belonging to his mother but he now steps up to his biggest assignment of all.

He has royal experience having previously designed headgear for Camilla Parker Bowles for her wedding to Prince Charles.

It is believed that Camilla made the introduction to Kate for Treacy.

Treacy originally studied fashion at the National College of Art and Design in Dublin.

He has also designed hats for Alexander McQueen's white Haute Couture collection at Givenchy in Paris and for Karl Lagerfeld at Chanel.

He designed hats for Lady Gaga in 2009.

He has also designed hats for various movies including Harry Potter films. He most recently designed Sarah Jessica Parker's hat for the premiere of 'Sex and the City.’
