The first trailer for "A Deadly American Marriage," the new Netflix documentary about the murder of Co Limerick native Jason Corbett in North Carolina in 2015, has been released.
The new documentary features commentary from Jason's wife Molly Martens Corbett, and her father, Thomas 'Tom' Martens, who were both found guilty of the 2015 murder of Jason.
The documentary also features commentary from Jason's two children, Jack, 20, and Sarah, 18. The siblings now live in Ireland under the guardianship of their aunt Tracey Corbett-Lynch and her husband David, who also feature in the upcoming documentary.
According to Netflix blog Tudum, the documentary’s exclusive interviews "present the divergent perspectives of those directly impacted by his killing."
Molly and her father Tom claim they were acting in self-defense when they killed Jason on August 2, 2015. Tom said that he discovered Jason choking Molly and that he acted to save her life. However, their original trial heard testimony from police and paramedics who said that there was no evidence of strangulation on her body.
"Things were not great," Molly says in the trailer for the new Netflix documentary, "there were times when I thought I might die."
Later in the trailer, Molly claims: "If I hadn't screamed that night, he would have just killed me."
In August 2017, Molly and Tom were convicted of second-degree murder and sentenced to 20 - 25 years in prison.
The North Carolina Court of Appeal ruled in February 2020 that both Molly and Tom were entitled to a retrial. Just before the retrial was set to begin in autumn 2023, it was announced that a plea deal arrangement had been agreed upon and that a retrial would not go ahead.
For the plea deal, Tom pleaded guilty to the voluntary manslaughter of his son-in-law, while Molly pleaded no contest to the voluntary manslaughter of her husband.
As part of the plea deal, the more serious charge of second-degree murder against Molly and Tom was dropped. In accepting the plea deal, both Molly and Tom would be regarded as felons.
The father and daughter were sentenced in November 2023, but, having received credit for time already served, were released in June 2024.
Tom says in the trailer: "I was going to save her life, and I have no regrets."

Also featured in the trailer are Jason's two children, who, then ten and eight years old, were asleep in the house when their father was murdered.
"Molly made me lie," Jack, then a child, can be heard saying in the trailer.
He says now: "I never saw my dad ever lay hands on Molly."
Sarah says: "My dad was really an amazing person."
"A Deadly American Marriage" will be available on Netflix in both the US and Ireland from 3 am EDT on May 9.
