The ‘Burlesque’ star – famed for her powerful voice – has been given the prestigious task of singing the US national anthem ahead of the NFL showpiece game on February 6.

In a statement released by the NFL, Christina said: “I have been performing the anthem since I was seven years old and I must say the Super Bowl is a dream come true. I am really excited to be part of such an iconic event.”

While Christina will sing the anthem, Black Eyed Peas will perform at halftime.

The game – between the Pittsburgh Steelers and the Green Bay Packers – takes place in Arlington, Texas, and will attract a star-studded audience as well as one of the biggest TV audiences of the year.

It is not the first time Christina has performed at the event as she sang during the halftime interval in Atlanta in 2000.

Other stars to have sung the national anthem ahead of the big match include Mariah Carey, Jennifer Hudson, Beyonce Knowles and Carrie Underwood.

One of the most controversial Super Bowl performances over recent years was a duet between Janet Jackson and Justin Timberlake in 2004 when he tore open her top and exposed her right breast.

Although Janet insisted it was an accident, she later apologised, saying: "I am really sorry if I offended anyone. That was truly not my intention."
