History will be made this Sunday as, for the first time, an NFL regular-season game will be played in Dublin.
The Pittsburgh Steelers play ‘hosts’ at Croke Park as they play the Minnesota Vikings at the home of the GAA. It’s a full circle moment for the Rooney family, who are the owners of the Steelers. The family have deep Irish roots, originating back to Newry, County Down, as the Rooney family emigrated to Canada during the famine, before settling in Pennsylvania, where Art founded the Steelers.
His son Dan Rooney was able to bring the Steelers over in 1997 to play a pre-season game against the Chicago Bears at Croke Park, and now Dan’s son Art Rooney II holds the majority control as the Steelers return to Croke Park after nearly 30 years.
It’s not just the Rooney family who are excited to bring NFL football to Dublin, but their star quarterback, Aaron Rodgers, too, is all too happy to be in Dublin. The four-time NFL MVP spoke to the media after the Steelers landed in Dublin, and he went straight to it and revealed his favourite drink, and you can all probably guess which one it is.
‘Guinness. Guinness on tap is my favourite beer in the world. I don’t really drink beer…’

He then opened up about wanting to spend more time in Dublin. There’s no time for tourist activities as the Steelers are straight back over to the States to face the Cleveland Browns next Sunday.
‘I’d love to go over Monday. Have a full week over there. You’ve got a bye week afterwards. Obviously, the NFL put a kibosh on that, supposedly.’

Rodgers also spoke about how big the Croke Park match is for everyone involved in the Steelers and the NFL, while also highlighting a personal pride in being able to play in Dublin.

‘This game means a lot to all of us, to the league. To the Rooney family. And so we want to represent the team and the Rooney legacy well. Being a part of the first game in Ireland is pretty cool. I have Irish heritage, so I’m very excited to get out there.
You can catch the game this Sunday at 2:30 PM Irish Time, and it’ll be broadcast live on Virgin Media 1.
