Hawaii Football coach Greg McMackin needs to be sacked.

Early Thursday morning, McMackin, speaking before a room full of reporters at the Western Athletic Conference media preview, offered his thoughts on the Fighting Irish football team:

Watch: Mackin's groveling apology and hear what he said.
Listen: In his own words - the original press conference
"I know most of the coaches in the country are rooting for us to beat Notre Dame,” McMackin said. "Charlie (Weis) gives this talk, 'We do something special at Notre Dame,' and (the players) get up and they do this little cheer ... this little faggot dance."

You're reading that correctly.

Perhaps realizing the magnitude of his doltish statement, McMackin then quickly attempted to distance himself from the incendiary term — which he used to describe the Notre Dame football team — by offering the following disingenuous plea:

"Don't write that 'faggot' down. I was misquoted," he said. "Just please … cover for me," McMackin said. "Go ahead, say 'faggot dance.' No. Please cover for me on that, too — right Karl? I'll deny it. Anything else?"

It's difficult not to find some humor in the last line, "Anything else"?

Sure, Greg, just one more question: How did you enjoy your first and final year as the head coach of the Hawaii Rainbows?

Imagine, for a moment, what would happen to you if your boss heard you utter the same word that McMackin spoke.

Well, guess what? McMackin's boss, WAC Commissioner Karl Benson, attended Thursday's media event.

Although Benson is not McMackin's direct superior, as conference commissioner, he certainly does have the power to administer punishment to the dim-witted McMackin.

Not surprisingly, McMackin issued an apology to the University of Notre Dame football team, his own football team and the entire state of Hawaii.

Weak, Greg. Very weak.

Notre Dame has been mum on this brewing controversy, issuing only a stock "no comment".

But will the same be true of Greg McMackin's boss?

Edit: After writing this piece, I was able to track down an audio feed of the press conference.

Some interesting notes:

McMackin repeatedly uses the word "faggot" during the span of a few minutes.

Furthermore, it must be noted, the reporters at the press conference sounded as if they were getting a kick out of McMackin's hate speech.

It certainly would be fitting to see some of these guys smoked out and into the news, earning a bit of shame, along with McMackin for his disgusting commentary.

Additionally, McMackin said "there aren't a lot of Notre Dame fans".
Let this remove any doubt that this bigoted coach is indeed stupid.

Greg McMackin should be fired post-haste. No questions asked.
