The 'Producers' star - who has three children, James Wilkie, eight, and two-year-old twins Tabitha and Marion with wife Sarah Jessica Parker - underwent a procedure in New York last weekend but has already left hospital to return to his home at 88 Central Park West.

A representative for the actor told the New York Post: "Matthew had a sports injury some time ago. He pulled something in his back and recently underwent routine surgery. It was a simple procedure. He is fine and is up and about and back at home."

Matthew is currently preparing to return to Broadway with a role in the musical 'Nice Work If You Can Get It' early next year. Although the surgery has not put his place in the show in jeopardy, he and Sarah Jessica were "were forced to miss some events in the Hamptons last weekend because of the surgery."

The couple moved to their current $21 million townhouse from their former home in the West Village area of New York City last December to accommodate their growing family.

Their new home - the former residence of philanthropist Laurie Tisch - features a 32-foot long living room, eight bedrooms, five bathrooms and five "half" bathrooms with two walk-in wardrobes in the master bedroom of the property.
