The pilot of the Dublin bound plane that was carrying Slovakian explosives failed to successfully alert the Irish authorities.

It has transpired that he was warned by security officials about the presence of explosives on board the plane. The pilot decided to telex Dublin airport about the "sample of explosive material" and said that it was "not dangerous" and "only used for dog training."

However, the pilot did not send the telex to the Dublin Airport Authority (DAA), but instead sent the telex to Servisair, the company he works for.

The pilot thought the substance mimicked only the smell of real explosives and was in no way dangerous.

Servisair spokesman Tony Brunskill told The Irish Times that they received hundreds of telex messages a day and were unaware of the problem.

“Had we been aware of the situation we would have told the DAA,” said Brunskill.

The Slovakian airport police have been severely criticized for not taking appropriate action in the matter.

The Slovakian ministry of the interior said that a telex was sent by the Slovakian airport authorities to Dublin airport.

The DAA have rubbished the claim by the Slovakians and said that the telex messages were sent to the wrong address.

The DAA said that they were only notified about the explosives on Tuesday and immediately rang the Irish and the police, who subsequently implemented a search for the explosive.

The telex sent by the pilot to Servisair reads as follows:

“Dear Colleagues, please be informed that we have received info from police department of (Tatry Airport) that there is forgotten sample of explosive material in baggage on board of flight no V58230.”

“The sample of grey colour is in plastic bag (size 5x5cm) in the rare part of black backpack (under harnesses) in hold no 3 or 4. The sample is not dangerous, it is only used for dog training. It is not able to cause explosion nor fire (no power source of detonator is included) Pilot in command has been informed about this sample by ATC (air traffic control). We would like to kindly ask you to return that sample with flight no V58231. Thx for coop.”
