In 2004, when Oisin Millea was only one year old, two 12-year old girls from Quebec put a message in a bottle and threw it into the St Lawrence River.

Last October, after traveling for nine years and surviving a 5,100-kilometre journey across the Atlantic, the bottle found its way to Ireland, where it was discovered by the now 10-year-old Millea.

This week Oisin and his family will visit Grande Vallee, the town where the bottle was tossed into the river. The girls, now in their early 20s, have also been invited to tour Ireland this summer, CTVNews.ca reports.

Oisin, who arrived in Montreal with his family on Thursday, told Canada AM that he's excited about the trip, which will include visits to Montreal, Quebec City and Grande Vallee.

"I think it’s just going to be really good,” he said. “We got to meet the girls last night and we went to loads of places.”

During the interview, he described how he found the bottle.

“It was a sunny day … and I wasn’t really looking for anything. I was just walking around and I stepped on something and it was a green 7-Up bottle” he said.

“I looked and I saw this little map, and I thought it was a treasure map at first. But it turned out to be a message… and it was better than any treasure.”

After the French note was translated online, Oisin and his family were able to locate the girls with help from the media.
